Our family is a bit crazy about travelling and we usually plan a day outing when all the family members get together. It’s a break from the routine work for the older generation and a fun filled vacation for the younger ones.  Last summer we had planned for Kumarakom, located 16 km from Kottayam which is my hometown.

Kumarakom is a very beautiful place and a famous tourist destination in Kerala. The quaint land is a cluster of islands on the vembanad kayal (lake). Before the day break we were all set for the adventures that lay ahead of us. The mesmerizing scenic beauty of the small rivers beside the thick green mountains, thousands of ducks floating along with the waters, the paddy fields, the green grass swaying along with the wind are some of the highlights.

Kumarakom is a home for a variety of flora and fauna and the best time to visit is December. Most of the bird lovers visit during this time to watch the birds migrating from different parts of the world.

It’s famous for boating. You can find a large variety of houseboats, not to the mention the famous Kettuvallams. The boat ride from Kumarakom to Pathiraamanal Island was very exciting. Flocks of birds, men collecting snails, greenery on the sides, small resorts, coconut trees lined up were some of the mind blowing sceneries. We spent about 2 hours on the island; the guide had showed us some rare variety of plants and a few birds.
Pathiraamanal is a lovely island in the lagoon. Pathiraamanal means ‘sands of night’.  It’s located amidst the Vembanad Lake.  We spent the morning there. Then we set to the bird sanctuary. Since it was summer and noon by the time we reached, we couldn’t watch the birds. We walked through the woods in search of some rare species all we could find were huge bats relaxing on the trees after their night shift. The sight of the green pastures and the country side itself fills in some unknown joy. It’s worth spending a day!
